Summary

Milling tealeaf makes powdered tea as a byproduct of powder tea or Maccha. Recently, these powdered-teas are used for various applications such as confectionery. Generally, powdered tea is produced by vibrating ball mill and is applicable for food quality of product in terms of color, flavor and particle size. Conventional vibrating ball mill can produce the particle size at the same level with milling by stone mill. However, the process time is longer than general impact mill at more than 10 hours and very low capacity. In cases where tea is milled by vibrating ball mill, several milling lines are required to increase the production volume.

Mass production
In order to achieve average particle size of 10-20μm as same size as vibrating ball mill at high capacity, ACM pulverizer has been utilized. ACM pulverizer can reach the required particle size at high capacity, but it couldn’t produce the product with high level of color and flavor. ACM uses large amount of air for processing and it causes oxidization damage to chlorophyll.

Glacis, grinding machine with specially designed cooling mechanism, can keep the product temperature at a low level during grinding. Comparing with ACM operation at the same power, necessary air volume for Glacis is 1/3 of that of ACM, which inhibits the oxidization of product.
As Glacis is not equipped with classifier, it needs a classifier separately to reject coarse particles. Normally, vibrating sieve is applied to separate the particles larger than 200μm. However, continuous operation is not possible because the sieve mesh can clog. So, Glacis is combined with air classifier Micron Separator. Because of this process steps, initial cost is higher than conventional impact mill. However, the production capacity is largely increased with high quality product.

Economical impact

If the required average particle is 10 to 20μm, the capacity per consumed power becomes 6 times of the conventional impact mill. For the system with classifier, the specific powder consumption (kg/kWh) is 3 times of ACM’s, the capacity per motive power become 3 times of it.

Quality evaluation

Milled product by Glacis represents excellent color and flavor. The quality of product is comparable to that of vibrating ball mill. Generally, tumbling ball mill has a smaller process capacity than a vibrating ball mill, but the quality is better than that. Quality level can be classified as the best tumbling ball mill > vibrating ball mill > Glacis > ACM pulverizer. We take out the pigment of milled products by organic solvent and separate them by thin-layer chromatography for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Products made by Glacis have almost the same pigment volume and composition to that of a tumbling ball mill and are superior to that of vibrating ball mill. (Fig.5) Analysis by gas chromatography shows the same level of abrasive fragrance ingredient volume as the product of ball mill. Glacis can conduct mass production of high quality powdered tea.
